Vikings Drop Close One at Chowan, Saturday Evening

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – Senior forward Jordan Jones recorded a game-high 24 points and nine rebounds as the Elizabeth City State University men’s basketball team dropped a 79-77 contest to Chowan university at the Helms Center Saturday evening.

With the loss, the Vikings are 0-12 on the season, 0-5 in conference play and 0-1 in the CIAA North; while the Hawks improve to 10-3; 4-1.

ECSU got off to another slow start, shooting only 38.7 percent from the field, 30 percent from behind the arc, and 66.7 percent from the line, with Chowan leading at the half by 13, 42-29.

Elizabeth City State saw a better half of shooting in the second half, rallying back from a 13 point deficit to come within two points on the Hawks. The team shot 52.8 percent from the floor, 44.4 percent from downtown, and 85.7 percent from the candy stripe but still came up short.

The Vikings shot 46.3 percent from the field, 36.8 percent from the behind the arc, and a season-best 80.0 percent from the candy stripe for the game in the effort.

Junior forward John Maynor recorded 16 points, senior guard Elon Edwards tallied 12; while junior forward Kyree Marshall scored 10 to round out the double-digit scorers for ECSU.

Marco Haskins spearheaded CU with 21 points, Carlos Arroyo added 14, Joe Goodwin tallied 13, Jeremy Smith scored 12, and Andrew Lopez rounded out the players for the Hawks in double-figures with 10.

ECSU will travel to Lincoln (PA) Wednesday, Jan. 18 to face Lincoln in another CIAA Northern Division showdown. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m.
