Final Stats

ELIZABETH CITY, NC- The Elizabeth City State University baseball team kept their hopes for a berth in next week's CIAA tournament alive with a double header sweep of Shaw University 7-0 and 8-0 Thursday afternoon.

However the, Vikings' post season push temporarily served as a backdrop to a near flawless performance by freshman Kerich Randolph, who threw a no-hitter in the game 7-0 win over Shaw in game one.

"I wasn't aware of it," the Bolivia, NC native said. "I didn't know until my teammates told me in between games. A lot of the credit goes to them because they made some great plays today."

Randolph, who leads the Vikings in strikeouts this season with 72, fanned 10 batters on Thursday. "In a way, I'm glad I didn't know (about the no-hitter). I felt good out there today. I'm just happy we got two wins."

The Viking defense was stout in both games on Thursday and had one of their best pitching outings of the season behind Randolph and fellow freshman Cameron Cecil. Cecil was solid in game two, surrendering only two hits in the 8-0 nightcap.

ECSU combined for 22 hits versus the Bears and with the sweep of Shaw sets up an interesting weekend of CIAA baseball.

The Vikings will travel to take on Lincoln University in Petersburg, VA tomorrow for a makeup game. Game time is slated for 1:00pm.

Even more intriguing is that ECSU and Virginia State both now sport 10-14 records in conference play; The Trojans will host Chowan University on Saturday before traveling to take on the Vikings on Sunday, April 17th in Elizabeth City. Also vying for the final Tournament seed is Lincoln University who boasts a 7-15 mark in conference play. They close out the season with doubleheaders against St. Augustine's, Winston-Salem State and ECSU.
