July 12, 2017

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – The Elizabeth City State University Viking Athletic Auxiliary Team tabbed 80 campers for its Inaugural ECSU Youth Basketball Camp hosted by ECSU Athletics in the R. L. Vaughan Center Wednesday morning.

The camp is committed to helping campers improve their individual basketball skills in all areas of the game, develop athletically, improving leadership and confidence on the court, and knowledge of the game.

The day started with registration, followed by breakfast and an introduction of the camp coaches and staff. Drill stations were set up around the gym floor as the campers began their conditioning. The drills were each slated in 20 minute increments. Campers worked on lay-up drills, chair drills, passing drills and ladder agility, form shooting, rhythm shooting, hand-eye coordination, finish drills, dribbling mechanics, resistance training, closeouts, box-outs, and elite spot shooting.

“I think that the camp turned out to be a huge success for not only my team but ECSU as a whole,” stated Maryella Leigh, President of the Viking Athletic Auxiliary Team. “We were hoping that this camp would be something positive for the communities around the surrounding area by giving the kids something to do while being out for the summer.”

“By putting on this camp, we wanted to inspire the kids to not only become great athletes but a better individual altogether,” said Leigh. “We were fortunate enough to have a mixed group of boys and girls and look to have more participants next summer.”

The Viking Athletic Auxiliary Team is a volunteer group formed to assist ECSU athletics in extending its reach into the local community. The group was formed to support all ECSU sports teams and assist in coordinating events and volunteer opportunities. The VAAT is comprised of ECSU alumni, local community members, and local businesses.

“We are excited about the Viking Athletic Auxiliary camp hosting this event at Elizabeth City State University,” stated Athletic Director Derrick Johnson. “This camp represents what ECSU and the Athletic Department would like to do with all surrounding communities. We are looking to engage and connect with everyone and this is the perfect event to do it.”
